FAQ

ABOUT THE ART:

* WHAT IS A GICLEÉ PRINT?

A gicleé print refers to a fine art reproduction that’s printed on high end, acid-free archival paper. Specialized printers are used that can accurately reproduce the color and depth of the original artwork.

* WHAT IS AN ARTIST EMBELLISHED GICLEÉ PRINT?

A gicleé  print is embellished by the artist using a process of layering with gel mediums and paint to bring out the highlights and subdue the lowlights of the print.  Since the paints are mixed and applied individually, each embellished print becomes unique.  Even if there are 25 Limited Edition Art Embellished Gicleé Prints in a series, each print within that series will have varying contrasts.

* WHAT MEDIA DO YOU USE IN YOUR ARTWORK?

My art consists of many layers that usually starts with initial sketching onto the canvas or tent-canvas with vine chalk or stick graphite.  I then apply pages from antique books or maps that are relevant to the message of the finished piece.  The actual image is built up with spray paint, oil paint, acrylics and gel mediums.  I work with one medium, seal it with the gels, then work with another medium and so on, building up individual layers.

* WHAT IS A GEL MEDIUM?

A gel medium is a flexible sealing agent that is applied to the painted surface and acts as a UV protectant so colors won’t fade.  It adds a rich, thick depth to the canvas, not only physically but visually.  When applied, it appears opaque but it dries clear.

* WHERE DO YOU OBTAIN THE PRINTED MEDIA THAT YOU USE IN YOUR ARTWORK?

The books and maps used are all at least 60 years old for copyright reasons, but a lot of the books and maps used are from the early 1900’s – 1920’s.  The titles of the artwork, at times, are also the titles of the books used as the canvas layering for the piece.  I get books and maps from rummaging through antique stores and seeing what grabs my attention.

SALES & SHIPPING:

* WHERE CAN I PURCHASE YOUR ART?

On the website under the “Sales” tab.  Also by contacting us via the “Contact” tab. For those in the Los Angeles area, select pieces are currently on sale at the Jeanie Madsen Gallery in Santa Monica, CA.

* DO YOU CREATE CUSTOM PIECES?

Yes, commissioned pieces are available upon request.  In the past I have created biographical portraits of people based off of a series of interviews I conduct.  This has then allowed me to extrapolate facts about what would be important to include in the final custom image.  I will often sketch potential mockups of what I have in mind to review with the client.  At times, original photos are incorporated into the layering that gives a physical history to the process.

* DO YOU MAKE FINE ART PRINTS IN DIFFERENT SIZES?

Yes, but limited edition prints are the same size within a series.  Occasionally custom size prints are requested by people who have something in mind as far as spacing on a particular wall in their home or business.  No small prints (less than 36″ in one direction) are offered since too much detail is lost in reduction.

* DO YOU SHIP OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES?

Yes, we ship internationally.

* HOW MUCH IS SHIPPING?

A gicleé print and artist-embellished gicleé print shipped within the continental United States is a $15 flat-rate.

International shipping costs vary depending on destination location.  Please contact us to find out shipping costs to your area.
